Young Writers Project is a creative, online community of teen writers and visual artists that started in Burlington in 2006. Each week, VTDigger publishes the writing and art of young Vermonters who post their work on youngwritersproject.org, a free, interactive website for youth, ages 13-19. To find out more, please go to youngwritersproject.org or contact Executive Director Susan Reid at sreid@youngwritersproject.org; (802) 324-9538.

Everything in moderation — even goodness, even peace, even happiness. For without the rainy days, how would we know a sunny one when it shines? This week’s featured poet, Beatrice Garvin of Peacham, reminds us with a tip of the hat that “the nuances of life show us the joy.”

Moderation

Beatrice Garvin of Peacham

To live is to die.

To laugh is to know what it feels like to cry.

To try is to fail.

To have friends is to have enemies as well.

The good does not stand alone,

but neither does the bad.

There is no yin without yang,

no heroes without villains.

Nothing good can exist when the evil’s demolished,

because life without death is a never-ending loop,

and an idealistic world is not one of truth.

The nuances of life show us the joy.

The devils simply prove that we have a choice.

Sadness is necessary if not abused,

for anything’s okay in moderation if you choose.
