MIDDLEBURY — The eclipse is soon to be a tri-generational affair for the Carlson and Johnston families, who were stationed just before noon at the park next to the Marbleworks complex, which looks out across the Middlebury Falls.

Shirley Carlson, 76, lives in Middlebury with her husband, John. Her daughter, Holly Johnston, 43, grew up there, but now lives in Waltham, Mass. with her husband, Stephen and their young son, Clay.

“Clay is 3,” Stephen said. “It’s that age where the whole world is exciting, but when you explain that something new is happening, it gets super exciting for a kid.”

The family had spent the morning explaining the moon’s orbit around the earth, and that the moon would briefly eclipse the sun — a special and rare event.

Asked by a reporter whether he was excited for the eclipse, Clay Johnston, 3, turned a shy face, but his family members all answered “yes” for him in unison.
