Dear Editor,
โUnique,โ if youโll bear with me, is a unique word. It allows no interpretation or modification.
You canโt be sort of unique, or even really unique. Unique means singular. There is only one like this. And that’s Goddard College, and more specifically, residency at Goddard College, even if only twice a year for eight days
I was at Goddard from 1969 to 1971, right in the thick of it. For once, I wasnโt too late. It was the Golden Age.
I was there for the Alternative Media Conference. Residency was full time then, and I was working for the school, running the print shop that put out โItโs Alright, Ma,โ the weekly student newspaper, and teaching students offset printing.
I went back in 1999 to finish my Bachelor in Arts in Transpersonal Psych. I received a semester of credit for life experience and graduated in 2001 (cue โThus Spake Zarathustraโ).
The administration should be hitting up the Gates Foundation. Have they? We could have a full time summer residency and let the students build new solar-powered dorms that could also be low-income housing. Doesnโt that sound like Goddard College?
When I talk to someone about life values and get a blank look and they say something like โthat isnโt in my rule book โฆโ
Well, we really need the really unique old Goddard to continue.
Jim Dodds,
Waitsfield
