Vermont State Police say the death of a 52-year-old incarcerated man who was hospitalized last week does not appear to be suspicious. 

Robert L. Brown of Johnson died Tuesday afternoon at the University of Vermont Medical Center in Burlington, state police said in a press release Wednesday afternoon.

Police said they were notified late Monday morning that Brown, who had been incarcerated at the Northeast Correctional Complex in St. Johnsbury, had been admitted to the University of Vermont Medical Center in Burlington the previous week and was not expected to survive.

Brown was pronounced dead the following afternoon, according to the release. 

An initial investigation revealed that Brown had been taken by ambulance on the morning of Feb. 27 from the prison to Northeastern Vermont Regional Hospital in St. Johnsbury. Brown had several health issues, including shortness of breath and chest pains, police said.

As his condition worsened, he was transferred to the University of Vermont Medical Center on Feb. 29, the release stated. 

His death does not appear to be suspicious, police said. An autopsy will be performed at the Vermont Chief Medical Examiner’s Office in Burlington to determine the cause and manner of death.

According to the Vermont Department of Corrections, Brown had been in custody since Nov. 8, 2023. 

He was serving a sentence of nine months to three years on charges including DUI fourth offense, operating a vehicle while license suspended, leaving the scene of a crash, unlawful trespass, and providing false information to law enforcement.
