Elle Purrier St. Pierre, a professional runner from Montgomery, won the women’s 3,000-meter race at the World Athletics Indoor Championship in Glasgow, Scotland, on Saturday.

The Olympian ran the event in 8 minutes and 20.87 seconds, setting both a North American and championship record. The 29-year-old’s win takes place less than a month after she set a different record, running an indoor mile faster than any American woman in history.

Purrier St. Pierre’s win also occurred just shy of a year after she gave birth to her son, Ivan, on March 4, 2023.

Two years ago, Purrier St. Pierre placed silver in the women’s 3,000-meter race at the World Athletics Indoor Championship in Belgrade, Serbia, with a time of 8 minutes and 41.82 seconds.

The athlete was raised on a dairy farm in Montgomery and previously represented the U.S. at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021. She finished 10th in the Olympic 1,500-meter final in Tokyo, making her the top American across the line.
