Vermont State Police said Wednesday that a body found the day before inside a large container on a sandbar in the Missisquoi River in Troy belonged to a missing Derby woman, who authorities say had been shot in the head.

The death of Kayla Wright, 29, has been ruled a homicide based on the findings of an autopsy completed Wednesday by the Chief Medical Examiner’s Office in Burlington, according to a state police press release.

Investigators conducted interviews with “people who might have relevant information” and searched a home on Vermont Route 100 in Troy for evidence that could be connected to Wright’s death, the release stated.

No one has been arrested. The federal Homeland Security Investigations is assisting state police.

Wright’s body was found by an unnamed person Tuesday afternoon in a container near Big Falls inside Missisquoi State Park.

Based on preliminary investigations, state police said they believe that this was an isolated event and that there is no known threat to the community.
