A big thank you to Bob Stannard for this piece, “Homelessness is a Symptom.” It presents an obvious and desperately needed balance to the fear of poverty, panhandling and dereliction fueling the NIMBY-ism fighting affordable and subsidized housing.
Most of us that imagine that we can keep “our Vermont” free of any or all of today’s social ills have been here all along — watching the unchecked growth of income disparity, big pharma’s successful marketing of oxycodone, and labor’s loss of power.
Bob Stannard’s piece offers a relatable corrective to our myopia. For lack of adequate lookouts, life jackets and lifeboats are now needed in quantity, for steerage and first-class alike.
