A Military Graveside Service will be held at New Mount Calvary Cemetery on Plattsburgh Avenue in Burlington at 11:00 am Monday October 9 th 2023. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to UVM Home Health & Hospice @ 1110 Prim Road, Colchester, VT 05446.
Following the service there will be a Celebration of life held at the VFW in Winooski (6 Maple Street). From 12:30 – 4:00.
James L. Hardy Sr, 78 of South Burlington passed away peacefully on Wednesday 9/27/2023 surrounded by his loving family at his home. The last 4 years Jim fought a long and courageous battle against COPD & Bladder Cancer, while under Hospice
Home Care.
James married Dorothy (Dottie) Mayo, the love of his life on October 7th 1967. Passing away just 10 days shy of their 56th wedding anniversary.
Jim was born in Burlington, Vermont on June 25th 1945 to the late Donald and Margaret (Denton) Hardy. He was predeceased by his parents Donald and Margaret Hardy, his sister Margorie and brother in-law Paul Grenier Sr, Inlaws Harold Sr and Dorothy Mayo, brother in-laws Harold, Thomas & Rodney Mayo.
Jim is survived by his wife Dorothy Hardy, son Jamie & wife Rachel Hardy of Essex, daughters Jodie West and Jenna Hardy of South Burlington, grandson Richie West and fiance Kayla Clayton of So. Burlington, granddaughter Nadia Comba and her father Paul Comba of So. Burlington, and bonus grandson Bryant Nichols and many nieces and nephews.
Jim attended BHS, where he enjoyed playing baseball through his high school years. After high school at the age of 18 he was drafted into the Army where he served his country in Vietnam from 1965 – 1967, Jim returned home with an Honorable discharge, receiving a Purple Heart after being blown up in a tank from hitting a land mine. Additional Medals Jim received were: National Defense Service, Vietnam Service, Expert Rifle M14, Vietnam Campaign, and Combat Infantryman Badge.
After returning home he was employed at General Electric for years before joining his parents in the family business Gove the Florist. Later he became owner and combined the flower shop with Jim’s Fishing Tackle. After the flower shop was sold, Jim went to work at Shelburne Plastics where he went on to retire in 2007.
Jim was a kind, and gentle man who enjoyed vacationing in Maine with his family and loved seafood. He enjoyed bowling, fishing and trail riding with ATV’s. Jim was also an avid hunter who spent a lot of his free time up at his cousin Junior’s (Ken) camp in Montgomery along with his nephew Paul Jr and other close friends and family.
We would like to thank the Hospice team for their care and support over the last 4 years. A special thank you to his nurse Judy Johnson of 4 years who was not just a nurse, but has become a close family friend who helped and supported us through difficult times. Thank you to his nephew John Grenier for all the projects you did for Uncle Jim.
