An Amtrak passenger train collided with a car at a rail crossing in Vernon on Friday afternoon, according to Vermont State Police.ย 

The driver of the car, Craig Hudson, 53, of Brattleboro, was killed. A passenger, Shenandoah Gilbert, 47, of Vernon, was injured, police said. 

According to press releases issued Friday and Saturday by state police, dispatchers received a report of the collision shortly after 5 p.m. It took place near the intersection of Route 142 and Bemis Road.ย 

Both occupants of the 2002 Toyota RAV4 were transported to nearby Brattleboro Memorial Hospital, where Hudson was pronounced dead. Gilbert was then transferred to Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, New Hampshire, where she continued to be treated for injuries as of Saturday afternoon.ย ย 

The Brattleboro Reformer reported that the Amtrak train โ€” traveling north on the Vermonter route from Washington, D.C., to St. Albans โ€” had 215 passengers onboard at the time, none of whom were injured. 

State police said it was continuing to investigate the incident.
