Vermont business owners and independent contractors have until 4 p.m. Friday to apply for disaster unemployment assistance.

People seeking assistance through the DUA program must first apply for regular unemployment benefits by calling 877-214-3330, according to a press release from the Vermont Department of Labor. As part of the application, they should state that their employment was affected by this summerโ€™s floods.

If a person is determined not to be eligible for regular unemployment insurance benefits but may be eligible for disaster unemployment assistance, the Vermont Department of Labor will contact the claimant to complete the application, the press release said.

Benefits were delayed by two months after glitches in getting the disaster unemployment program going.
