A former Champlain Valley Union High School student โ€œthreateningly displayedโ€ a BB gun during a boys varsity football game Saturday afternoon at the Hinesburg school, according to the districtโ€™s superintendent.

Students who saw the audience member brandish the gun during the game immediately alerted an administrator, who then notified the Hinesburg Police Department, according to a districtwide email Champlain Valley School District superintendent Rene Sanchez sent late Saturday afternoon.

โ€œThe police responded immediately and ensured the safety of those attending the event,โ€ Sanchez said in the email. Calling it a โ€œtraumatic event,โ€ Sanchez said mental health professionals would be available at the school this week to support students.

It was not immediately clear how the police department responded nor whether the former student faces charges.

Neither Sanchez nor Hinesburg police were available Sunday to comment.
