Rutland police say one man is dead and another has been wounded in a shooting Saturday in a Cherry Street apartment.
Santonieo K. Miller, 35, of Albany, New York, was found dead by officers inside the apartment, according to a press release from the Rutland City Police Department. Chief Brian Kilcullen said Tuesday that Miller had been shot multiple times.
According to Kilcullen, a neighbor called police around 4 p.m. Saturday to report a physical altercation. Arriving officers found a man who was suffering from multiple gunshot wounds, police said. Kilcullen said that man was taken to Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, New Hampshire, for treatment.
Police are not releasing that person’s identity because they have yet to make contact with his family, Kilcullen said.
As officers investigated, they found another man, later identified as Miller, dead inside the apartment.
Kilcullen said Tuesday that there were a “number of individuals” at the apartment at the time of the shooting.
Though the investigation is ongoing, police said, early indications are that the shooting was an isolated incident and there is no ongoing threat to the public.
“We believe this was targeted,” Kilcullen said.
Asked if the shooting was drug-related, the police chief replied, “That’s something we’re looking at.”
Kilcullen said he was not aware of any previous contact that Rutland police had with Miller.
