BRATTLEBORO — Brattleboro Police say the death of a person whose body was found Wednesday afternoon at the base of the Harris Hill Ski Jump is suspicious.

Around 1 p.m. Wednesday the Brattleboro Fire Department responded to a report of a person down an embankment off Cedar Street, according to a press release issued early Thursday morning.

The person was declared dead at the scene, the press release added.

“Brattleboro Police responded and began an investigation,” the release stated. “At this point the death is being considered suspicious.”

Brattleboro’s assistant police chief, Jeremy Evans, said at the scene Thursday morning that the body was found adjacent to the base of the ski jump.

Cruisers from Brattleboro Police and Vermont State Police were parked late Thursday morning in the parking lot of the ski jump. The lot was closed to the public. The ski jump property sees a large number of hikers and walkers in the spring, summer and fall.

Multiple police dogs were at the scene Thursday off Cedar Street.

Police released no additional information.

After one set of police dogs surveyed the property Thursday morning, a second group double-checked in the afternoon.

Authorities left the scene late Thursday afternoon saying they wouldn’t be releasing an identification or any other details until at least Friday.

“We’re still waiting for a few things, including information from the state medical examiner’s office,” Evans said. “But there’s no indication of anything that would be a greater public safety concern.”

In response to an email from VTDigger, Windham County State’s Attorney Tracy Shriver wrote that she was not available Thursday to talk about the death.
