A man who was charged with murder last week is facing new charges related to an assault on a woman in October 2021.

Following the arrest last week of Claude Mumbere, 29, of Colchester, a Winooski Police Department officer recognized him as a suspect in an Oct. 6, 2021, assault in Burlington, according to a press release issued Monday by the Burlington Police Department.

Mumbere is being held without bail as he faces charges of second-degree murder in connection to the death of Kelley Cusson, 31, of Burlington, at the Champlain Street Park in Burlington earlier this month.

According to a 2021 press release, another woman was reportedly struck โ€œmultiple times in the face and head with a cleated aluminum snowshoe.โ€ The victim was taken to the University of Vermont Medical Center with face injuries. Police described the attack as โ€œunprovoked and random.โ€

In addition to Winooski Police, a Vermont State Police trooper also identified Mumbere. Burlington Police matched a fingerprint from Mumbere to evidence collected at the scene, according to Mondayโ€™s press release.

Mumbere will be arraigned on the new charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon in Chittenden County Superior criminal court Tuesday morning.
