Human skeletal remains were found floating in Lake Champlain on Sunday, according to the Colchester Police Department. 

Dispatchers received a call at around 3:25 p.m. indicating that the remains had been seen near Colchester Point, the department said in a press release Sunday evening. Police located them roughly six feet offshore, recovered them by boat and transported them to the state Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Burlington to perform an autopsy and identify the deceased. 

“No foul play is indicated at this early stage of the investigation,” police said in the press release. 

Colchester Point is located near the southern terminus of the Colchester Causeway, two miles northeast of the mouth of Winooski River. Lake levels have risen roughly two feet following massive flooding throughout Vermont last week, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. 

Corporal Jaime Bressler of the Colchester Police Department said the rising water levels could have unearthed the body, but she said the state of the remains suggested that the death was not related to the recent flooding. 

“My understanding is it had been in the water for some time,” she said.
