There’s a word, hypnopompia, for what Julia Roberts’s Tinkerbell describes as “that place between sleep and awake, that place where you can still remember dreaming.” Have you ever felt Mother Nature drifting through her own transitional state of consciousness at the break of dawn, lingering in a drowsy haze? This week’s featured poet, Marlo Viglas of Sandgate, offers us a simple moment of tranquility on a quiet, misty morning.
Lake of mist
By Marlo Viglas, 13, of Sandgate
When you wake up,
the cold air whisks around your face,
fresh.
Walking down to the lakeside,
a thick mist is visible on the clear surface.
You push your boat into the water and clamber in.
Your hands skim the icy surface of the lake.
You dip your paddle into the water,
sending ripples along the crystal surface.
You advance into the mist.
It tingles on your skin.
But the early summer morning light rises,
and the mist recedes into the cold, damp woods.
