A man incarcerated at the Northeast Correctional Complex in St. Johnsbury attempted to escape Tuesday from the prison but didnโ€™t succeed, according to the state Department of Corrections.

Corrections officials became aware Tuesday afternoon of Seth Brunellโ€™s attempt to escape the secure section of the prison, the department said in a press release. He โ€œdid not pose a danger to the public during the event,โ€ the department said.

Brunell, 44, is being held without bail at the prison on a charge of second-degree murder. He has been in corrections custody since April 2022, when he was charged with the killing of Fern Feather, a transgender woman from Hinesburg.

Both the Department of Corrections and the Vermont State Police are investigating the escape attempt. No other information was immediately available.
