An incarcerated person at Southern State Correctional Facility in Springfield is accused of assaulting a corrections officer and causing โ€œserious injuries,โ€ state police said in a press release on Friday.

The news came one day after state police described another assault on a corrections officer that caused โ€œminorโ€ injuries at the Springfield prison.

Treston Jordan, 23, โ€œcaused serious injuries to Correctional Officer Jeffrey Heath during an altercationโ€ on March 12, state police said. Jordan is being charged with aggravated assault, according to police, and is scheduled to appear in Windsor Superior criminal court on May 9.

Jordan, who is from Brattleboro, according to court records, is still being held in Springfield, police said. He is serving a six-to-seven month sentence for felony cocaine possession and eluding a law enforcement officer, among other charges, according to Haley Sommer, a spokesperson for the Vermont Department of Corrections.

Sommer declined to provide any information about Heathโ€™s medical condition and current work status, citing medical privacy. She also declined to share any information about where Jordan is being held within the Springfield prison.

In a written statement, Corrections Commissioner Nicholas Deml said that โ€œthe staff experience, including safety, is of highest priority to me and the greater Department. This includes protecting their medical privacy following a traumatic event.”

Assaulting a corrections officer can cause an incarcerated person to be placed in โ€œdisciplinary segregationโ€ for up to 30 days, according to the stateโ€™s inmate discipline policies.

On Thursday, state police described an assault on another corrections officer. Korbyn Bacon, 27, allegedly assaulted Derek Bancroft on an undisclosed date. Bacon struck the officer in the face with an โ€œobject,โ€ state police wrote in a press release.

As a result of the incident, Bacon was charged with assault, according to state police, and he is also due to appear in Windsor Superior criminal court on May 9.

According to Vermontโ€™s online inmate locator, Bacon is still being held at the Springfield prison on multiple robbery charges.
