Three people were hospitalized after a driver traveled the wrong way on Interstate 89 Sunday night, according to Vermont State Police. 

At the scene of the crash, emergency responders pulled an unconscious person from a car that was on fire, police said in a press release. 

Troopers received calls at 10:51 p.m. that a vehicle was traveling south on the northbound side of I-89 in Milton, the release stated. On the way to the scene, officers were told that the vehicle had crashed. Police arrived to find three cars totaled, one of which was on fire.ย 

Vermont State Police identified the wrong-way driver as Ernest Yangassa, 43, of Colchester. 

Yangassa, and the drivers of the other two vehicles, identified as Veronica Valliere, 18, of Northfield, and Michael Amoah, 25, of Burlington, were transported to the UVM Medical Center. 

Police closed the interstate, north of Exit 17, for approximately three hours as a result of the crash. According to the press release, the investigation is ongoing.

Milton Fire Department, the state Agency of Transportation and multiple EMS agencies also responded to the crash.
