A central Massachusetts woman whose body was found in her truck in Brattleboro died of a gunshot wound to the head, according to autopsy results released Thursday evening.
The slaying of Mary Anderson, 23, of Harvard, Massachusetts, remains under investigation by law enforcement agencies in Vermont, Massachusetts and New Hampshire, “including when and where she was killed and whether she was abducted,” Vermont State Police said in a press release announcing the autopsy results.
Police identified Anderson’s ex-boyfriend, 34-year-old Matthew Davis, of Fitchburg, Massachusetts, as a person of interest after her body was found early Tuesday morning.
After police located Davis walking in West Brattleboro Tuesday night, two state police troopers and a Brattleboro officer shot and killed him after they said he lunged at them with a knife. On Thursday, police said that Davis “ran from investigators seeking to question him” before pulling the weapon.
Davis remains a person of interest in Anderson’s disappearance and death, police said. Investigators found her cellphone in the area where he ran from police, they said.
Police also released autopsy results for Davis on Thursday, indicating that he died from gunshot wounds to the torso.
Both deaths were ruled homicides, meaning they were intentionally caused by other people.
The Vermont Attorney General’s Office and Windham County State’s Attorney’s Office will review the police shootings to rule on whether they were justified.
The three law enforcement officers — Detective Sgt. Jesse Robson and Detective Sgt. Samuel Truex, both of the Vermont State Police, and Patrol Officer Ryder Carbone of the Brattleboro Police Department — were placed on paid administrative leave, per policy.
Anderson was last seen alive late Saturday night in Hudson, New Hampshire. Her family reported her missing the next day.
Her body was discovered at about 12:55 a.m. Tuesday inside her blue Toyota Tacoma pickup, parked on Elliot Street, according to police.
