A truck hit the top of the covered bridge on Center Street in Lyndonville “once again,” according to a Vermont State Police press release.
Police responded to the incident at noon on July 16. The truck driver, Joshua Stewart, had been following his wife’s vehicle in his rental Penske moving truck down a route intended for use only by vehicles under 11 feet, 9 inches tall, according to the press release.
The rental Penske moving truck exceeded that height.
Stewart’s wife had been using GPS to navigate the return of their moving truck, police said. Stewart’s wife’s vehicle could safely pass through the bridge, but “sadly” the moving truck did not fit, and broke a portion of the bridge’s covering, police said.
Lt. Owen Ballinger of the St. Johnsbury barracks told VTDigger that Lyndonville has five covered bridges, and there were six incidents last year in which vehicles struck the coverings of various Lyndonville covered bridges.
The press release made note of a sign before the Center Street bridge, which states: “ALL vehicles above 11′ 9″ DO NOT fit under the covered bridge.”
“Once Stewart realized the errors of his ways, he pulled over and called the Vermont State Police,” according to the press release.
