Vermont State Police are investigating the death of a 64-year-old South Burlington man whose motorcycle crashed in the northbound passing lane of I-89 in Richmond Thursday night.
No other vehicles were involved in the crash, according to a state police press release.
The victim, identified as Joseph Cafferky, was operating a 1983 BMW motorcycle when the accident occurred. Cafferky died at the scene before state police arrived shortly after 6pm. The motorcycle was found in “a position of uncontrolled rest” in the passing lane, near the Route 2 overpass of the interstate, state police said.
Witnesses told police they saw no motor vehicle violations prior to the crash. The state Medical Examiner’s Office will conduct an autopsy. The accident closed down the northbound travel lanes of the interstate between the Richmond and Williston exits for more than two hours.
