A tractor-trailer rolled over Thursday night on Route 64 in Williamstown, killing the driver and a passenger, Vermont State Police said.
Route 64 was closed for five hours as authorities dealt with the crash.
Police said the tractor-trailer flipped while going around a sharp corner, slid into a ditch and landed on its roof.
The driver, Dante Elliott, 46, was taken to Central Vermont Medical Center in critical condition and died at the hospital, police said. The passenger, Nicole Ende, 37, was pronounced dead by emergency crews at the scene of the crash. Both lived in West Haven, Connecticut.
Police believe mechanical failure contributed to the crash, as witnesses reported the truck’s brakes were smoking.
Police are still investigating.
