Vermont’s Democratic candidates for secretary of state are set to take part in the first media-sponsored debate of the race on Tuesday, June 7, at 6 p.m. VTDigger will host the online-only event on its website. Click here to register.

The debate will include Rep. Sarah Copeland Hanzas, D-Bradford, Montpelier City Clerk John Odum and Deputy Secretary of State Chris Winters, all of whom are competing for the Democratic nomination. VTDigger is not holding Republican or Progressive debates for secretary of state because only one candidate from each of those parties will appear on primary election ballots.

The candidates, who are vying to replace retiring Secretary of State Jim Condos, will face questions on election integrity, open government, ethics reform and other topics. The debate will be moderated by VTDigger political reporter Lola Duffort and managing editor Paul Heintz.

This event is part of the 2022 Digger Debate Series, which kicked off in April with a U.S. House forum and will feature additional debates this summer focused on Vermont’s races for lieutenant governor and attorney general. VTDigger will host additional debates during the general election this fall with nominees for governor, U.S. Senate and other top offices.
