An investigation into a shooting shut down multiple blocks surrounding Burlington’s City Hall Park on Monday morning.
At about 4:15 a.m., police received a call from a woman who said her friend had been shot, according to a press release. Officers said they found the woman who called them, who was with an injured person.
The injured person was taken to the hospital, police said.
While the incident is still under investigation, the release said evidence at the scene — which included samples of blood — “suggests an exchange of gunfire among multiple parties.”
“There were a lot of rounds expended,” acting Police Chief Jon Murad told VTDigger.
Because of the amount of evidence, Murad said, police blocked off parts of College, Church and St. Paul streets from shortly after they arrived until around 8 a.m.
Officers narrowed the expansive scene as the morning progressed, Murad said.
“In crime scenes, you can always start big and get smaller, but you can’t start small and get bigger, because by the time you do, it’s contaminated,” Murad said.
By late Monday afternoon, police had no more information about the investigation, Murad said, but they knew that the hospitalized person was still alive.
