Andrew Brown, president of the Village of Essex Junction, has set his sights on the Vermont Senate.

Brown announced Monday he is running in the new, three-member Chittenden Central Senate district, which covers Essex Junction, Winooski, most of Burlington and a sliver of Colchester.

In a press release, Brown highlighted his leadership during Essex Junction’s successful bid for independence this year from the town of Essex, as well as his work to secure funding for upgrades to the soon-to-be-city’s Amtrak station.

“As a native Vermonter, I have always appreciated the spirit of community and the commitment we have to coming together when helping others,” he said. “By running for state Senate, I hope to bring that spirit of collaboration to Montpelier.”

Brown said he has spent more than a decade in roles supporting Vermont’s social safety net, including at the Counseling Service of Addison County, Vermont Student Assistance Corp. and Evernorth, an affordable housing nonprofit.

If elected, he said, he would focus on diversity, equity and inclusion; affordable housing; business development; and “affordable, high-quality” child care.

Only one incumbent senator from the district, Sen. Phil Baruth, D/P-Burlington, plans to run for reelection. Also in the race is Rep. Tanya Vyhovsky, P/D-Essex, who threw her hat into the ring earlier this month.
