Dear Reader,
A more informed Vermont is a smarter Vermont, and thereโs no better time to start than at an early age. Thatโs why VTDigger is partnering with the Childrenโs Literacy Foundation (CLiF) this spring to send 3,000 brand new books to kids across the state and raise awareness about the importance of early literacy for the next generation of news readers.
This month, we are asking readers to support two worthy causes with one monetary contribution. When you become a VTDigger member or make an additional gift at the level thatโs right for you, youโll be powering our local journalism and CLiF will send one book on your behalf to a Vermont child.
Did you know 60 percent of low-income families have no childrenโs books at home? CLiF focuses their services on low-income, rural and at-risk children. For many Vermont kids, the books they receive from CLiF are the first ones theyโve ever owned.
Pandemic-related learning loss has widened pre existing opportunity and achievement gaps, hitting disadvantaged students hardest. Nationally, test score gaps between students in low-poverty schools and high-poverty schools grew by 15 percent in reading during the 2020-21 school year. On average, K-12 students were four months behind in reading by the end of the school year.
With the proliferation of misinformation in todayโs world, itโs crucial for children to develop strong literacy skills so they can become the well-informed news readers of the future.
Today, you can foster childrenโs literacy and support VTDiggerโs nonprofit journalism at the same time. Will you help us send 3,000 books to Vermont children in the next 30 days?
Become a member by donating to VTDigger in any amount during our Spring Membership Drive this month and we will send one book on your behalf.
Vermonters of all ages need trusted information to participate in a healthy civic society, and it all starts with learning to read. Thank you for being a VTDigger reader and valuing our reporting.
Yours,
Anne Galloway
