At least one person is dead following a crash that involved about 30 vehicles on Interstate 89 northbound in Milton Friday, according to Vermont State Police.
โThere is one confirmed fatality. Other injuries appear to be minor or moderate,โ Vermont State Police said in a press release Friday evening. โThe number of people and the exact number of vehicles involved are still being ascertained by investigators on the scene.โ
The crash took place at about 4 p.m. just north of Exit 17, police said. It occurred under โheavy snowfall and blowing snow, and the road was snow-covered and icy at the time,โ police said.
A significant emergency response was on the scene Friday evening, including state police and local fire and rescue personnel. The roadway remained closed as of about 7 p.m. Friday, and traffic was being diverted, according to police.
The investigation is in its preliminary stages, police said.
Photos posted on Twitter showed several crashed vehicles off the road.
