In another Covid-19 outbreak in Vermont’s prison system, 28 incarcerated people and three staff members tested positive for the virus at the prison in Newport, the Vermont Department of Corrections announced in a Wednesday press release.
Three incarcerated individuals at Northern State Correctional Facility already had tested positive before further testing was conducted Tuesday, officials said in the release. Twenty-five additional incarcerated people who are positive for the virus all reside in the same unit as the three prior positive cases, officials said, but the remaining three cases detected Wednesday are “from three different general population units.”
Of the three prior positive cases, two were recently transferred from St. Albans’s Northwest State Correctional Facility where 15 incarcerated individuals have tested positive for Covid since Jan. 30.
As of Wednesday afternoon, 45 incarcerated people are positive for Covid-19 across three Vermont Department of Corrections facilities. Positive cases among those incarcerated had dipped to 19 on Jan. 28.

In addition, 24 staff members are positive for the virus across six correctional facilities, three field offices and the central office, according to the release.
The Newport facility is on full lockdown, and all other facilities are on “modified operations,” according to corrections department spokesperson Rachel Feldman.
