The Covid-19 outbreak at the stateโ€™s largest prison is increasing, with a total of 32 cases of the virus detected since the outbreak began this month at the Northern State Correctional Facility in Newport, according to the state Department of Corrections.

Six new cases were detected among incarcerated individuals in testing conducted Thursday, the corrections department reported over the weekend. So far, 24 incarcerated individuals and eight staff members have tested positive in the outbreak, Rachel Feldman, a corrections department spokesperson, said Monday.

The eight staff members include one person who obtained testing on their own and has not been working at the prison during the outbreak period, according to Feldman.

None of the 32 people who tested positive have required hospitalization, according to Feldman.

A breakdown of the incarcerated individuals who tested positive shows that 13 had been vaccinated, nine were unvaccinated and the vaccination statuses of the other two weren’t available yet, Feldman said.

The Northern State Correctional Facility in Newport is the stateโ€™s largest prison, housing 382 people, according to correction department figures.ย
