Covid cases in Vermont have risen a whopping 58% since the beginning of November, driven at first by an increase in Northeast Kingdom countiesโ€™ case rates.

But increasingly, the brunt of that wave has spread southward and eastward, while a separate surge is hitting the bottom half of the state.

In the far northeast corner of the state, Essex County cases dipped slightly over the past two weeks, even though the countyโ€™s cases still lead the state totals.

Meanwhile, Rutland and Bennington counties in the south have pushed Orleans and Caledonia out of the second and third-highest slots, respectively. Rutland city, one of the largest municipalities in the state, has reported 175 cases in the past two weeks, and its cumulative case count has risen 15% over that time period.

Bennington town reported 188 new Covid cases, for a total of 1,666 cases over the course of the pandemic.

Seven Orange communities are now reporting the highest category of case spread, defined as 80 cases per 10,000 people in the past two weeks.
