After a month of elevated case rates, Orleans County reported a decline in new Covid cases in the past week, a sign that its latest surge may be ebbing.

But Essex and Caledonia county figures appear to be rising, keeping the Northeast Kingdom in the top spot in the state for its Covid case rate compared to its population.

Essex County is now reporting the highest per-capita case rate in the state, with 149 cases per 10,000 people in the past two weeks. The statewide average is 52.

Itโ€™s difficult to say how the recent record-breaking one-day case total may have affected the regional outlook for the state. Caledonia and Essex counties reported new record highs on Thursday, but a whopping 167 cases are still pending validation of their geography, making it difficult to see how they compare to the state as a whole.

The most recent town-by-town data from the Department of Health includes data only through Nov. 3, so that too does not show the full impact of recent case highs. But it does show that 18 communities in the Northeast Kingdom are in the top category of case spread compared to their population, defined as more than 80 cases per 10,000 people in the past two weeks.

Note: Brookline, Brunswick, Granville and Lemington each appeared in the departmentโ€™s raw data for the first time in the past two weeks. Itโ€™s impossible for VTDigger to say how many recent cases there have been in each community, but each has had at least six cases during the entire pandemic.
