The Vermont Department of Health disclosed five new Covid-19 deaths in its data on Wednesday. All five people died in the first few days of November.

The health department reported 198 new Covid cases Wednesday, registering a seven-day average of 220 cases per day. The rolling average has wavered up and down since a relative peak in mid-October.

Fifty-two people are currently hospitalized with the virus, including 17 in intensive care units. Hospitalization figures have also varied recently, from a recent peak of 60 on Oct. 29 to only 47 hospitalizations a few days later.

In total, 374 people have died in Vermont during the pandemic.

The department also released the latest week of K-12 school data on Tuesday. Schools reported 153 cases in the past week among students and staff who were on school property while infectious.

The state has reported 1,284 cases in K-12 so far this school year, compared to 1,402 cases for the entire 2020-21 school year, which took place during hybrid learning but preceded the arrival of the highly contagious Delta variant.

Among the hardest-hit schools are Barre Town Elementary and Derby Elementary, each with more than 40 cases reported. Barre Town first reported cases on Sept. 12 and has continued to report cases for most weeks, including four in the past week. Derby has been reporting cases since the first school report on Sept. 6, and reported four new cases this week.
