September is coming to a close as Vermont’s second-deadliest month of the Covid-19 pandemic, with at least 37 fatalities reported, according to data from the state Department of Health.

Although the number of deaths reported for this month could rise in the coming days because the state often reports deaths retroactively, September’s fatality rate almost certainly won’t match that of December 2020. That month, 71 people died of Covid as the virus overwhelmed long-term care facilities.

The state also reported 223 new Covid cases on Thursday, an increase after two days during which new cases remained under 150. Case counts tend to be higher later in the week.

The seven-day case average has ticked down slightly, to 184 cases per day from an average of 217 on Sept. 17. That’s still far higher than the seven-day average of 150 cases a day on Aug. 30, exactly one month ago.

Forty-six people were in the hospital with a Covid infection Thursday, including 10 in intensive care units, according to the state.
