Police have identified the woman who drowned in Charlotte last week. Katherine Curley, 74, of Evergreen, Colorado, was found dead in Lake Champlain last Friday, according to Vermont State Police reports.

Police were called to the Point Bay Marina area Friday at 10 a.m. after an off-duty firefighter who was fishing saw an elderly man—later identified as William Snow, 76, of Evergreen—in “mental distress” while alone in a sailboat off the shore of Cedar Island.

The U.S. Coast Guard towed Snow in his 29-foot sailboat back to shore and he was taken to the University of Vermont Medical Center for evaluation.

Meanwhile, another boater called 911 at 10 a.m.. saying they had found a body off the shore of Cedar Island. The Coast Guard and Charlotte Volunteer Fire Department located Curley’s body, which was taken to the Chief Medical Examiner’s Office in Burlington for an autopsy. The cause of death was found to be accidental drowning, police said.

Police determined that Curley and Snow left Point Bay Marina together on Thursday night for a sailboat ride and never returned.
