Vermont reported 60 new Covid-19 cases Monday, a lower-than-average number but one that caps a weekend of rising case numbers.
With 137 cases reported Saturday and 144 reported Sunday, the seven-day rolling average hit 120, the highest so far in the latest surge of the pandemic.
The Department of Health also reported 33 people are currently hospitalized with the virus as of Monday, the highest number of people hospitalized since early April. That number includes 13 people in the ICU.
It’s unclear how many cases or hospitalizations are connected with vaccinated or unvaccinated patients. The state reports limited weekly or bi-weekly data on breakthrough cases, and the latest data available shows that the rate for vaccinated Vermonters is far lower than unvaccinated Vermonters but has risen in the latest surge.
One good sign in Monday’s data is that the positivity rate appears to be declining from a recent peak. The percent of tests that came back positive hit a one-day high of 4.7% on Aug. 7, but was 3.2% on Monday, with a seven-day average of 2.9%.
That could signal the rising number of tests performed each day is having an effect on better identifying cases of the disease. About 3,700 tests were performed each day in the past week, compared to about 2,000 tests per day at the beginning of August.
No new deaths were reported on Monday; 270 people have died since the beginning of the pandemic in Vermont.
