Burlington police arrested Luis Rivera, 44, Monday for aggravated assault after they say he tried to stab another man in City Hall Park.
The victim, Rivera’s girlfriend’s ex-boyfriend, had tried unsuccessfully to retrieve his cellphone from his ex-girlfriend’s car. As he walked away toward City Hall Park, witnesses say Rivera followed him, pulled out a knife and swung at him, according to a Burlington Police Department press release.
Rivera allegedly said that he would stab the victim and that the victim would die.
The incident occurred at about 3:37 p.m. Monday.
Police arrested Rivera that night when they were called to an unrelated disturbance downtown. He was released on court conditions and issued a citation to appear in Vermont Superior Court Tuesday at 10:30 a.m.
Rivera has two previous felony charges with one conviction, two misdemeanor convictions and two assault convictions.
