Burlington police are asking for the publicโ€™s help in finding an unidentified man whoโ€™s wanted on a charge of attempted second-degree murder in an assault that seriously injured another man.

Police were called to the area of Main Street and South Winooski Avenue June 21 at 3:24 a.m. for a report of a disturbance. Police said they saw evidence of a physical altercation, including โ€œobvious injuriesโ€ and a substantial amount of blood in the road.

People at the scene were not cooperative and โ€œberatedโ€ them, police said. A woman reported that a man had been โ€œkicked in the head,โ€ but that man was gone before police arrived.

โ€œWith no victim present to be identified, officers remained on scene while the group in question dispersed,โ€ a release issued Thursday by police stated.

The next morning, on June 22, police said a man contacted them and reported that his son had been assaulted and was in the hospital, awaiting surgery.

In interviews, the victim and his girlfriend said they had both been assaulted early in the morning of June 21 near Main Street and South Winooski Avenue. The woman suffered minor injuries, police said, but the man was awaiting surgery to treat several skull fractures.

โ€œBased on statements provided by both parties,โ€ police said, โ€œit was learned that the male victim had been struck repeatedly in the head by one male with a cast and had sustained multiple โ€˜curb stompsโ€™ to the head from another male while lying on the pavement unconscious.โ€

Police say the man who repeatedly โ€œcurb stompedโ€ the male victim is wanted on a charge of attempted second-degree murder.

โ€œAs of the issuance of this media release,โ€ the police statement said, โ€œthe identity of this second  male suspect is unknown, identified only as a skinnier black male approximately 5โ€™6โ€-5โ€™8โ€ and having been seen wearing a black brand-name hoodie with a white T-shirt underneath, dark pants, and dark shoes.โ€

That man was last seen walking away from the area of 199 Main St. toward the Champlain Farms at 219 Main St. shortly before officers arrived June 21.

Police said that, with the suspectโ€™s identity unknown, they are asking for the publicโ€™s help in locating him. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Burlington police at 802-658-2704.

Police identified George U. Mnyonge, 31, as the person who allegedly assaulted both the man and the woman June 21, using a forearm cast as a weapon. He was arrested June 25 on charges of simple assault and aggravated assault, police said.

Mnyonge pleaded not guilty at his court arraignment and was ordered held without bail, according to Chittenden County Stateโ€™s Attorney Sarah George.

Mnyonge was listed Friday on the stateโ€™s online inmate locator as being held at the Northwest State Correctional Facility in St. Albans.
