The rise in cases in Stowe last week has slowed, knocking the ski town out of the top category of cases per population, according to data from the Department of Health.

But Killington and Stratton in southern Vermont, which dropped out of the top tier weeks ago, are back in it, joined by another ski town: Burke.

The ski towns may be reporting high cases due to a health department initiative to test skiers. According to Dr. Mark Levine, state health commissioner, the department has coordinated with resorts to offer on-the-spot testing to anyone who wanted it.

A handful of other northern Vermont communities were in the top category as well, including Newport city, St. Albans city, Franklin, Enosburgh, Belvidere, Lemington and Alburgh.

Newport had a surge in Covid cases following an outbreak at Northern State Correctional Facility that has hit more than 100 inmates. But the outbreak there has slowed, too: The town reported a 25% increase in the past week; cases had more than doubled the week before.

Elsewhere in the state, Ferrisburgh and Hancock were also in the top category for case rates.
