The latest town-by-town data published by the Department of Health shows that Winooskiโs Covid cases have grown 100% in the past two weeks, the only town with more than 5,000 people to do so.
Winooski added 159 cases between Dec. 9 and Dec. 23, more than Burlington, the largest city in the state, according to health department data.
The town of Bennington also saw a large rise in Covid cases, the first sign of the countyโs burgeoning outbreak at a town level. The town added 81 cases in the past two weeks, an 88% increase, although its overall Covid rate remains relatively low compared to other towns.
According to a health department map, the towns with the highest Covid rates by population in the past two weeks were Killington, Baltimore, St. Albans City, Craftsbury, Greensboro and Lemington.
Several towns with rising numbers are connected to long-term care facility outbreaks. Craftsbury, a town of 1,100, is the site of Craftsbury Community Care Center, which reported 24 cases among its residents and staff as of Friday.
Some reports have suggested out-of-state skiers have come to Killington in recent weeks despite quarantine rules, but itโs not clear whether any of the cases in the town were connected to that population.
The health department releases limited data at a town level, only providing precise numbers if a town has had more than five cases of the virus. Officials have cited health privacy laws as the reason for the data restriction.
The state asks those being tested for the virus for their ZIP codes, and follows up with more precise questions about the location of those who test positive, the health department says.
