VTDigger has released a 2020 Election Guide designed to give you the information you need to make decisions about who to vote for in the August 11 primary. The guide includes House, Senate and statewide races.
Covid-19 has wholly altered the campaign season. More Vermonters than ever have already cast early absentee ballots, and candidates, limited by social distancing rules, are not able to engage in the kind of retail politics that has been a hallmark of local elections.
Our guide, the fourth produced by VTDigger, highlights changes in voting and pays particular attention to the impact of Covid on issues readers said they care most about in a recent survey.
We asked candidates how they would make the state a more attractive and affordable place to live, whether they support a mask mandate, and whether K-12 students should go back to school.
We also asked what steps candidates believe should be taken to prevent more Covid-19 outbreaks, and whether they believe systemic racism, criminal justice and police reforms are issues the state should address.
VTDigger’s guide includes:
- A voter how-to, with information about registering to vote, early ballots and polls
- A reader-generated survey of statewide candidates for governor and lieutenant governor, plus House and Senate candidates
- Bios of candidates
- All of the latest election news
- Video ads
- House and Senate roll call votes on major issues
- List of town clerks offices and polling stations
The guide will be updated every day as new information is made available.
This week, we are publishing in-depth profiles of the candidates for lieutenant governor and governor. Here are our profiles of candidates for lieutenant governor, Debbie Ingram and Brenda Siegel.
We hope you find the guide useful. Many thanks to the candidates who took the time to respond to the survey. If you’re a candidate who hasn’t yet participated in the guide, please contact us at election@vtdigger.org and we’ll send you the survey. We will continue to update the guide over the next few weeks.
