[Y]oung Writers Project, an independent nonprofit based in Burlington, engages young people to write and use digital media to express themselves with clarity and power, and to gain confidence and skills for school, the workplace and life.
Each week, VTDigger features a writing submission โ an essay, poem, fiction or nonfiction โ accompanied by a photo or illustration from Young Writers Project.
YWP publishes about 1,000 studentsโ work each year here, in newspapers across Vermont, on Vermont Public Radio and in YWPโs monthly digital magazine, The Voice. Since 2006, it has offered young people a place to write, share their photos, art, audio and video, and to explore and connect online at youngwritersproject.org. In the words of Emily Dickinson, โHope is the thing with feathers that perches in the soul and sings the tune without the words โ and never stops at all.โ Framing far-reaching global concerns through the imagined lens of her grandchildren, this weekโs featured poet, Lila Taylor of Charlotte, reaffirms the necessity of maintaining hope in times like these to propel us toward a more just, stable future.
100 years from now
By Lila Taylor, 17, of Charlotte
In 100 years, whenย
my future children have children,ย
I hope that they grow upย
in a world that is kinder than this one.
I donโt mean kinderย
as in softer or less hardworking,ย
I mean kinder as inย
more understanding,ย
less closeminded,ย ย
and more open to change.ย
I hope that they grow upย
in a world that is not plaguedย
by hateย
and frustration,ย
violenceย
and despair.ย
I hope that communitiesย
are more diverse by thenย
in every way possible,ย
and that theyโre less segregated.
I close my eyes and I tryย
to dreamย of a world for themย
in which our differences do notย
so often divide us as a human race.
A world where we allย
listen to each other,ย
where we are constantly tryingย
to do right by each other, andย
bridge the gaps created by history.
A world where it doesnโt matterย
what color skin you have,ย
or whether youโre born a boyย
or a girl.
A world where loveย
is just seen as love,ย
no matter who itโs between.
A world in which the policing systemย
in this country, as a whole,ย
truly protects all Americans,ย
not just those with white skin,
and in which the American Dreamย
is truly an equal possibilityย
for everyone who lives in this country.
A world where social classย
doesnโt divide us so intensely.
I hope that by then,ย
when 100 years have passed,ย
this world will truly have changedย
for the better, in a dramatic way.
I hope that our Earthย
isnโt so polluted by thenย
that my grandbabies will never knowย
what itโs like to play in the snow.
I pray that by thenย
we will have found a solutionย
to climate change,ย
and I pray that by thenย
there will be more equalityย
in this countryย
and in this world.
