The Vermont Department of Motor Vehicles is now offering in-permit driver’s license and online learner’s permit tests after several months where the services were suspended due to Covid-19 closure.
The reopening of the DMV was announced at Gov. Phil Scott’s press conference Monday.
As of Monday, Vermonters can take their learner’s permit exam online, and — if they pass — receive their permit by mail within three weeks.
Commissioner Wanda Minoli said the move to online for Vermont’s learner’s permit test is a “silver lining” of the pandemic.
On Monday, June 8, in-person driver’s license exams will also resume. Minoli said over the next few days the department will be contacting and prioritizing Vermonters whose previously scheduled exams were canceled because of Covid-19.
But on Wednesday, June 3, she said, they’ll start scheduling driving tests appointments for any Vermonter looking to schedule an exam, regardless of whether they’d previously booked a spot.
To help get through the backlog, the DMV will also allow any certified driver education instructors who are employed or contracted by a school to become certified as an agent of the DMV to help conduct road tests.
The DMV’s Montpelier, South Burlington and Rutland regional offices will also reopen to help with the scheduling, Minoli said.
