Burlington police are investigating a late Sunday night homicide on North Avenue.

Steven Martin, 38, was pronounced dead at the University of Vermont Medical Center shortly after the shooting, according to a Monday morning statement from the department.

Police received a call at 11:39 p.m. Sunday night from a caller who said that two men pushed their way into a residence at 126 North Ave. The caller then heard multiple gunshots, and additional callers said that a male victim had been shot, according to the department.

Police are working to identify and apprehend the perpetrators, and the department is asking those with additional information to contact police at 802 658-2704.

Deputy Chief Jon Murad said Monday morning that the department was working on evidence collection and following leads, and did not have any additional information at this time.ย ย

Burlington Mayor Weinberger said Monday afternoon that the investigation was in the early stages but the police did not believe that it was a โ€œrandom act.โ€

โ€œThe information gathered so far strongly suggests the individuals involved were known to each other, and we are following up on a number of leads,โ€ he said.

Weinberger said his thoughts were with the victimโ€™s family and the department would share additional information as soon as possible.
