

Janos Marton, who led policy strategy on the campaign to close the Rikers Island jail complex, will speak about efforts to reform the nation’s prison system at an event sponsored by VTDigger, ACLU Vermont and the University of Vermont College of Arts and Sciences.
The event will also feature a panel discussion with state experts and a legislative update from state lawmakers.
VTDigger is bringing together leaders who are working to change Vermont’s prison culture in the wake of alleged sexual misconduct and drug use by correctional officers in facilities around the state.

Keynote speaker Janos Marton is a nationally recognized advocate for criminal justice reform. He is a candidate for Manhattan District Attorney and was manager of state campaigns for the ACLU’s Smart Justice initiative. Prior to the ACLU and the close Rikers campaign, Marton served as Special Counsel to the Moreland Commission to Investigate Public Corruption in New York.
Panelists include James Baker, Interim Commissioner, Vermont Dept. of Corrections; Ashley Messier, National Council for Incarcerated and Formerly Incarcerated Women and Girls; and Sarah George, Chittenden County’s State’s Attorney.
Sen. Dick Sears (Bennington) and Rep. Selene Colburn (Burlington) will talk about prison legislation in the Statehouse this session.
The event will be co-moderated by VTDigger’s executive director and editor, Anne Galloway, and Alan J. Keays, criminal justice reporter.
