A Vermont State Police trooper is facing a charge of drunken driving following his arrest early Monday morning while he was off-duty in Rutland.
Craig Roland, 32, of Whiting, was released on the misdemeanor DUI charge on a citation, Rutland City Police Chief Brian Kilcullen said Monday afternoon.
A court date for Roland was not immediately available.
Kilcullen said Roland had crashed his vehicle on Deer Street in Rutland around 6 a.m. Monday. Police said a preliminary roadside test revealed Roland had a blood-alcohol level of 0.189, more than twice the 0.08 legal limit for driving in Vermont.
Roland, who is a state police trooper and was off duty at the time, was then taken into custody for DUI processing, according to Kilcullen.
The police chief said Roland did not submit to an evidentiary breath test at the police station.ย
Roland’s most recent scheduled on-duty shift as a trooper was from 5 p.m. Saturday to 2 a.m. Sunday, according to state police.
Roland was not injured in the crash, Kilcullen said.
Vermont State Police said in a statement Monday afternoon that Roland has been placed on paid administrative leave โfollowing protocol under the collective bargaining agreement with the Vermont Troopersโ Association.โ
State police referred specific questions about the arrest to the Rutland City Police Department, adding that an internal investigation will also be conducted by state police into the incident.
โBecause internal investigations are confidential as a matter of law,โ the statement added, โno further information is available about this incident.โ
Roland was hired by state police in January 2017. He has been assigned to the Rutland state police barracks since his graduation from the Vermont Police Academy in July 2017.
