A Newport man was arrested Sunday after leading troopers on a high-speed car chase with two children in his vehicle, according to Vermont State Police.

Jake Buck, 32, faces six charges, according to state police: attempting to elude; careless and negligent operation; excessive speed; driving with a suspended license; reckless endangerment; and child cruelty.

The incident began on East Hill Road in North Troy at about 1 a.m., troopers said.

Troopers attempted to stop Buckโ€™s vehicle for a registration violation when, according to state police, he sped off.

The pursuit spanned eight miles through North Troy, with Buckโ€™s vehicle reaching a top speed of 76 mph in a 35-mph zone, troopers said.

Buck stopped in the parking lot of Community National Bank and was arrested, troopers said. Troopers said they found two children in car seats inside the vehicle.

Buck also had an active warrant, state police said. Adam Silverman, a state police spokesperson, said the warrant was for a furlough violation.

He was held without bail in Northern State Correctional Facility, where he remained as of Monday morning, according to the Department of Correctionsโ€™ online database.
