A Newport police officer sustained minor injuries after crashing his cruiser during a high-speed chase Wednesday, according to Vermont State Police.

Officer Andrew Gonyaw spotted a driver in violation on Mount Vernon Street in Newport Town around 10 p.m., troopers said.ย

Gonyaw called Vermont State Police for help and pursued the driver at high speed to Schuler Road in Derby, east of I-91, troopers said. Thatโ€™s when the officer lost control of his 2017 Ford Taurus Interceptor and went off the road, overturning the car.

The pursued driver fled, state police said, and an ambulance took Gonyaw to North Country Hospital in Newport. He received minor injuries to a hand and leg, troopers said. The Taurus incurred heavy rollover damage.

State police did not reveal the alleged violation and didnโ€™t know the make and model of the pursued vehicle.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call the Newport Sgt. Charles Moulton at 802-334-6733 or or state police Sgt. David Roos at 802-334-8881.
