An inmate has died at Southern State Correctional Facility in Springfield, according to the Department of Corrections.

Anthony M. Nichols, 59, was found unresponsive in his cell on his bed Saturday morning during a headcount, according to a release from the Vermont State Police.

He was pronounced dead at 8:20 a.m. on Saturday, officials say.

Nicholsโ€™ death is not considered to be suspicious, police say. The cause has not yet been determined.

Nichols had been held in prison since January 2018 and was facing a charge of sexual assault. He was being held for lack of $50,000 bail, according to the DOC.

The departmentโ€™s health services director will conduct a review of Nicholsโ€™ death, a standard DOC policy. Police are also investigating, as is protocol in the deaths of inmates in DOC custody.

The Office of Chief Medical Examiner will determine his cause of death, according to DOC Commissioner Mike Touchette.
