[A] storm system rolling in from the west is set to dump up to 2 feet of snow in Vermont over the long weekend.

Conditions should remain relatively clear until Saturday afternoon, said meteorologist Roger Hill, but roads will likely be snow-coated by dark. Snow will continue falling heavily through the night and into Sunday, leaving behind between 8 inches and 2 feet of snow.

The highest snow totals will be in southern parts of the state, and particularly the Rutland area. The Champlain Valley could see about a foot of snow, and the Barre-Montpelier area near 18 inches.

โ€œThis is going to be really that fluffy, powdery snow. Maybe not as powdery as Utah, but pretty close,โ€ the forecaster said. โ€œThis is going to be just what the doctor ordered for skiers, snowboarders, folks with snow machines are going to be just in glorious heaven after the end of this.โ€

Still, outdoor recreation enthusiasts should take heed. Monday — Martin Luther King Day — will be extremely windy, with possible whiteouts, and see temperatures with a daytime high likely under zero degrees.

โ€œI donโ€™t want to diminish what would otherwise be a beautiful, fantastic holiday situation for the skiers and all, but they gotta understand itโ€™s going to be kind of dangerous out there in terms of this bitter cold,โ€ Hill said.
